Your Child and Eczema
Why do some children get eczema? We dont fully know why this happens. Some children are born with a tendency to eczema and some are not. It may be present in the parent or other brothers or sisters may have the condition. On the other hand, it may be that there is no family tendency to eczema. This can sometimes be confounding and confusing.
It is more likely that you child will have eczema if you or your partner have eczema. Eczema is a condition which is part of the allergy system. It is often present in conjunction with hay fever or asthma. Many children or adults who have eczema also have either asthma or hay fever. In fact, a lot of people have all three. In general, they will have an allergic type tendency. Their skin may become red and itchy and irritated.
They may have difficulty breathing at times and be wheezy. Or they may have problems with irritation and itchiness in the throat or in the nasal passages. Hay fever will cause the nose to become blocked, swollen and irritated. This may result in sneezing and stuffiness of the nose, nasal passages and sinuses. Any eczema that a sufferer has is often found in typical places on the body. This includes the front of the elbows [in the skin creases] and the rear of the knees [also in the skin creases]. These are typical places but eczema can appear anywhere on the body and in severe cases can affect several parts of the body at once.
Eczema will cause red patches, dryness of the skin, irritation and itching. It may be worse if you come in to contact with certain items of clothing, for instance, woolen garments. It can be made worse or exacerbated by heat or sweat. When the eczema has flaired up it can be tempting to scratch the red irritated patches. This will often serve to make the condition even worse. As the patches become more irritated and itchy, so it becomes more inflamed and irritating as they are scratched. There are things that you can do that can help the irritation without scratching. Some things can be done via purchases items over the counter or online whereas other things may require your doctors intervention and advice.
