Boating Marinas Clean Boating Practices

Boating marinas and boaters need to work together to keep the water clean so that it can be enjoyed by boaters and also to protect the wildlife and plants. Many states and provinces have adopted a set of regulations for boating marinas and boaters that we will call clean boating practices. Some of them are guidelines, while others can carry a penalty or fine if they are not followed by the boating marinas or the boaters themselves. The better boating marinas are really trying to educate boaters and also provide boaters with the resources and information that they need so that we can protect the environment while still enjoying the water and recreational boating and fishing. Here are some clean boating practices that all boaters and boating marinas should follow:

Cleaning the Boat: As soon as a boater gets out of the water the first thing that they should do with their boat is to rinse it down with plain, clean water. This will rinse off any residue and dirt and will not harm the environment. Boating marinas should provide a source of water for boaters to do this. If this is not possible, or if the boat has been in the water for awhile, then you can find a gentle, environmentally friendly cleaner-such as a citrus-based cleaner. Read the labels for any warnings.

Disposing of Waste and Trash: It should be obvious that you should not throw any type of trash (paper, cans, Styrofoam, plastic, etc.) into the water or on the shore where it can end up in the water. Boating marinas should have lots of trash containers and even recycling bins for boaters in convenient places with signs to direct people to them. Fish waste should also be thrown in the trash not in the water. Human waste should be pumped out at a pumping or other specially designated dumping station in most boating marinas. Used oil and other harmful liquid waste should be put in covered receptacles.

Maintenance and Repairs: One of the common maintenance tasks at a marina is sanding and painting. Choose paint that is not harmful to the environment and paint and sand away from the water. There are special sanders which have vacuums to contain all of the dust and paint chips to prevent them from going into the air and eventually the soil and water. Any oil or fuel or other liquid spills should be wiped up with a rag, and any that spill into the water should be reported immediately so that they can be cleaned up properly. Do not put detergent on them-it can do more harm than good.

Here are some tips you should take in consideration when planning for the best cruise vacations:

Keep in mind your lifestyle. Does the cruise activities and fellow travellers feel right for you? Thinking about this will help avoid feeling uncomfortable during your trip. Some cruises even require you to have certain type of clothing if you want to attend their restaurants or events.

Plan ahead how the weather is going to be. Nothing is more frustrating that vacations going bad because of the weather, if you cant stand too much sun you should think twice going on a Caribbean Cruise.

Consider the itinerary. The pace of the itinerary is also important, some cruises spend more time at sea than others.

Be on the lookout for unnecessary charges.

Get all the help you need from your travel agent. Ask all the questions you have. Trust me, it is better to find out about some things before taking the cruise.

Final tip, just have fun! This should be the top priority on a vacation. If you feel you will spend more time in your vacations worried, take another cruise.

What Is Included In Your Cruise Price

Many travelers new to cruising do not always realize that not everything is included in their cruise price. Many are SHOCKED when they board their ship and realize they will need additional monies to get them through their trip.

So, you ask, what is included and what should I expect to pay for while Im on my dream vacation?

Although each cruise line has its own set of inclusions, the following information does apply to the majority of the cruise lines; the ones that are categorized as Mainstream Cruise Lines.

What is included in the price of your cruise?

  • Accommodations
  • Meals
  • Limited Beverages
  • Onboard Activities
  • Children and Teen Programs
  • Fitness Centers
  • Entertainment

Accommodations - With your stateroom accommodations a cabin steward will be assigned to you. S/he will attend to your every need including turning down your bed at night, cleaning of your room at least once a day, etc. Cabins come equipped with televisions and stereos. Bathroom amenities that are often included are shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soaps, razors, etc. Most new ships may also include blow driers and refrigerators (but not always). Because of fire hazards, irons are not furnished and are not allowed in the staterooms; however, ships do offer ironing services at a fee.

Meals - You will certainly not go hungry while cruising. All meals are included from day to night. Most cruises have 24-hour buffet areas where you can eat any time of day. Sit down gourmet dinners that are served include appetizers, salads, main entre and desserts. You can also order additional entrees (if you are glutton). Popular meals are also the ships midnight buffets, pizza parties, and ice cream parties. If you are still hungry or just want to order in, the ships 24-hour room service is always available.

Limited Beverages - Overall, drinks are not included unless they are being served with breakfast, buffets or dinners. Included drinks are usually limited to iced tea, lemonade, some juices, coffee, and water (not bottled).

Onboard Activities - You will never be bored on a cruise ship because they have ongoing activities throughout the day that are gratis. These may include swimming or relaxing in a hot tub, contests and games, dance and golf lessons, karaoke and sing-a-longs, etc.

Children & Teen Programs - All of the mainstream ships will offer organized children and teen programs that keep the entire family happy. These programs are normally categorized by age and include age-appropriate activities.

Fitness Centers - Cruise ships offer state-of-the-art fitness centers for the health-conscious traveler. Centers include fitness machines such as stationary or spin bikes, treadmills, and stair steppers. There are also offerings of aerobics, yoga or Pilates classes. Not all classes offered are free, but there are many to choose from that are included. Hint: these classes fill up fast!

Entertainment -What kind of entertainment is offered on a cruise ship? We dont have enough time to list everything, but these ships include theatres that feature elaborate Vegas-style shows, singers, comics, etc. Additionally you will find cinema-style theatres that show current movies. There are bar lounges with music to dance the night away, karaoke bars to sing the night away, or piano bars. There are numerous deck and pool parties. And dont forget the Casinos which may feature high-stakes poker tournaments (of course gambling money is not included).

You will find that the list of what is not included in a cruise is much shorter than what is included.

What is NOT included in the price of your cruise?

  • Tips
  • Beverages
  • Spa Treatments
  • Shore Excursions

Tips - When paying a cruise rate, the tips will not be included, although you can always pre-pay for the tips. Most of the workers on a cruise ship earn most of their money on tips.and they do EARN IT — you will not find better waiters, stewards, or bartenders anywhere. Most cruise lines have recommended tipping standards that normally start at $10.00 per day per guest. Basically, these tips are distributed among the personnel that service your every need for the included cruise items such as your stateroom stewards, waiters, or bus person. Most cruise lines will automatically add their recommended tip amount to your stateroom account at time of sailing. This amount can always be decreased or increased based on the service received.

Beverages - Alcoholic beverages are not included in your cruise rate. Also sodas, specialty coffees, or bottled water are not included. There may be options to buy packages for unlimited wine or alcohol or sodas that may be worth purchasing your beverage consumption is high.

Spa Treatments - All cruise ships offer state-of-the art spa treatments such as messages, facials, and salon services. All these are extra..but, boy, are they worth it!!!!

Shore Excursions - Of course shore excursions are not included. There are dozens of things to do when ships dock at the beautiful exotic destinations. Cruise lines make it VERY easy for their clients to book excursion on-line even before they board the ship. Of course, shore excursion bookings are also available once you board.

    TRY TO REMEMBER TO.

. Keep track of your spending by holding on to all receipts
…. Check your account balance throughout the day.
…. Book the must-do shore excursion ahead of time since they may sell out

Tips on Marina and Dock Sealing

It is important to follow these procedures when sealing a private dock or a dock at the marina. Always let the dock dry for three to twenty-four hours before applying any coating or sealant. You cannot put a seal coat over on top of moisture or wet wood.

Mask off boats, shrubbery, masonry, foliage with drop cloths or large sheets of cardboard. When using an airless sprayer use a 0.014-inch fine tip at about 250 to 500 PSI. if you are using a lower pressure sprayer or pump sprayer that is okay, but get in close. Apply water repellant, coating or sealant to railings, spindles, etc. first. Then move to the floor of the dock, deck or pier. Always work with the grain spraying in that direction. Use liberal portions of coating.

    Be sure to brush out any puddles or drips aiming for smooth uniform application. Make sure whatever product you end up choosing is a preservative and not just a water repellant. Always have your EPA information with you, which you can download from the Internet;

    www.EPA.gov

Knowledge is power. If you choose to use any other water repellant coating or sealant make sure it says U.V. (ultra-violet) protectant. Also look for a mildew retardant. This is especially important because these horizontal surfaces are subject to intense heat and sun damage with fast algae growth rates.

If you are a contractor and doing this for a living; Remember that the marina manager or the dock master can be a great benefit to your business. Treat them well and they will usually bend over backwards trying to get you an unlimited amount of work through referrals. They will usually introduce you to boat owners. They can also be a great contact for any yacht sale or boat sale companies there on site, which will also give you almost unlimited work if you give them good results and reliable, consistent work. Boat dealers always need services and they know everyone.

You should also have some spill containment devices such as oil absorbent floating devices. These sealants are quite toxic and will kill sea life or fish in a lake. They also stick to boat hulls, which could really piss someone off big time.

Do it right the first time, think about it.

Save Money On Your Cruise - The Biggest Money Trap On A Cruise

I am an experienced cruiser, I have visited many different ports of call on many different cruise ships. I have enjoyed cheap cruises and more expensive ones, and the one thing that they all have in common is that they all want your money.

Of course, the cruise line is a business just like any other, and they are very good at extracting money from you. In a previous article, I outlined the 3 best free things that you can do to enhance your cruise. You should read that article if you have not already. But the topic of this one is to learn how to save money on your cruise by learning where the traps are.

The biggest money trap is obvious, it is the sign and sail card. For those who have not cruised yet, the sign and sail card is issued to every adult on the cruise. You can use it in place of cash on the cruise ship , and just pay the bill at the end of your vacation. You can use it everywhere: In the bar, the gift shop, the casino and coffee shop, just to name a few.

The problem is that it is just like a credit card. Statistically, we will spend 18% more if we only use credit cards because we do not think of it as spending money. The same is true with your sign and sail card. The challenge is that in most places on a ship, you cannot pay cash even if you want to. You cannot hand the waitress any cash on the lido deck, unless you are giving her an additional tip, even the tips are added to the card.

The best way to handle it is to identify the places that you can pay cash and resolve to pay cash there: The casinos, bingo, and tips to the room steward, and dining room waiters are all places where you can and should pay cash.

In addition, I always go to the Pursers desk at least two or three times to pay down my room bill. This reduction in the cash in my wallet is a not too subtle reminder of how much I am spending.

    The Toughest Trimaran Sail Race?

It has been said that the Nokia Oops Cup is the toughest sail racing competition in northern Europe. That is propably true and its a tough competition measured with international standards also. If you are interested in extreme sailing this is something for you.

Nokia Oops Cup 2006 will be an international match between Norway, Sweden and Finland. Nokia Oops Cup starts in Oslo June 6 and will compete in Gothenburg, Stockholm, Helsinki, Malm, Copenhagen and finally finish in Kiel August 19.

The good thing with this sailing race is that the cup includes both spectator friendly City Races and not only Offshore Races.

The trimarans used in this competition are called the Formula 1 of sailing, as they are some of the fastest sailboats in the world. A trimaran demands experienced and skilled skippers and extraordinary capable crews to sail the 18 meter long and 16 meter wide racing machines.

The top speed of a trimaran can be over 40 knots, and in relatively normal wind conditions, a Nokia Oops Cup trimaran logs between 20 and 35 knots.

And the winner in the international match is the boat, the skipper and the crew that has got the best total result from all the contests.

    We say: Good luck!

    Caribbean Cruises For Seniors

Seniors often find cruises to be the perfect vacation choice. The reasons for this are many. For one thing it offers an ambience that is entirely removed from daily life. It offers seniors warm relaxing days and fun filled nights filled with on board activities.

When it comes to expense, cruises are a good choice for seniors. Cruises are generally all inclusive vacations. Having paid for the cruise upfront, seniors need not be bothered with any hidden costs later on.

Caribbean cruises are a very popular vacation option. Several ocean liners offer excellent packages for seniors. Seniors can opt for a seven night East Caribbean cruise. This package could cost about $600, but it would be all inclusive. With this package senior vacationers would be able to visit Port Canaveral and Cococay on the first two days. The third day would be spent drifting on sea. Several on board activities can be chosen to spend time in an entertaining manner. Seniors usually opt for a game of cards or just relaxing on the deck taking in the sights. The other destinations covered would be Charlotte Amalie and Philipsburg followed by two more days at sea finally coming back to Port Canaveral on the last day.

The other options are a West Caribbean cruise and South Caribbean cruise. Seniors can choose from different packages that will take different routes. A cruise visiting Port Everglades, St. Marteen, Grenada, Barbados, Antigua, Tortola and Levantado interspersed with idyllic days at sea, would span ten days and cost around $900. Another popular cruise route is through San Juan, Oranjestad, Willemstad, Philipsburg, Charlotte Amalie and back to San Juan.

Special dietary needs are taken care of on board if previous intimation is given. All cruise liners have an infirmary staffed with para-medical personnel. This way, two main concerns of seniors are attended to.

A senior Caribbean cruise is truly a rejuvenating and fun filled way of spending a vacation.

Boating Supply - Finding What You Need Online

If you are a boat owner, you may be frustrated by the lack of boating supply stores in your local area. The discount big box store just doesnt have what you need all of the time-especially when it comes to engine parts and more specialized products. If you want to avoid these issues one of the best ways to shop for boating supply products is to go online. The internet is not only a wealth of information about boating supply items, it is a great resource to find virtually any part that you are looking for whether it is a new propeller or a custom seat cover.

A common reason to go to a boating supply store is to upgrade your boat. You may want a more powerful engine than the one the manufacturer installed, or you may just want a better stereo or starter. There is a large group of aftermarket products available to consumers who want to improve their boat and you can easily find what you are looking for at a boating supply site. This is a good option whether you bought your boat new or used, or even if you are working on an antique boat.

One of the routine maintenance chores on a boat is painting it. The paint that you will find at your local home improvement store is not usually the type of paint that you should use on a boat. So, go to an online boating supply store and find a paint that is not only just the right color, but that will keep your boat looking good for years to come and will be environmentally friendly as well.

If you buy boating supply products at a sporting goods or department store, the salesperson may or may not be knowledgeable in your specific boating needs. If you go online there are many websites and online information pages that can give you specific advice about products, upgrades, and repairs. You can even find experts who will answer your specific questions.

To look for that perfectly matched accessory, you may want to first check the manufacturers site to see if they recommend any supply store, but then find out if you can get the product for less anywhere else. Check for warranty information, return policies, shipping costs and good customer service as well as price. When you are shopping on the internet it is quick and easy to comparison shop.
