Simon Lee, the Old Huntsman

The object of “Simon Lee” seems to be to vindicate the instinctive character of the emotion of gratitude as against Godwins utilitarian rationalism. Godwin represented it (gratitude) as an unjust and degrading sentiment, having its origin in the unequal distribution of wealth, influence etc.
Wordsworths poem “Simon Lee, the Old Huntsman”, which occurs in Lyrical Ballads, recounts an actual encounter the poet had with the old huntsman.

Simon Lee lived in the shire of Cardigan, not far from pleasant Ivor-hall. This old huntsman was once strong and active. He ran as a merry huntsman for thirty-five years and no one could rival him in keeping the pace of the hunt. But now his health has declined and his feudal master has died. In his old age he is now bereft of his health, strength, friends and kindred. Impoverished and childless, his aged wife is his sole companion. He lives in a moss-grown hut of clay on a scrap of land.

On a summer day the poet found the feeble old man trying to sever a tree-root with a mattock, but in vain. The poet offers him help and with a single blow severs the tangled root. Moved by this kindly help the old man bursts into tears of gratitude and profusely thanks the poet.

Gratitude is a capacity that is at the heart of what is naturally human and humane. Cold rationalism would not find room for such a humble (however profound) emotion in the old mans tearful thanks. The act of weeping manifests his integrity and also points to mans general cold-heartedness. As the poet movingly comments

Ive heard of hearts unkind, kind deeds

With coldness still returning

Alas! The gratitude of men

Has oftener left me mourning.

Here the poet-narrator ministers to the reader, conducting him through an experience of purgation. The pathos and the incongruity of old age is the underlying theme of the poem. The poem is drawn from humble and rustic life. The old huntsman is as close to the earth as the stubborn tree-root which he had vainly tried to uproot. And it has the simple language of simple people who have lived close to hills and streams.

Wordsworth here wants to direct our attention away from the incident to the feelings which, as he stated, give importance to the action. The feelings include not only those of Simon Lee, but also of the poet-narrator who also becomes emotionally affected.

The poem reveals that the humblest episodes of everyday life have a bearing on the human condition. It makes us think as well as feel, and this sensibility is truly educative.

6 Ways to Fix Your Flyers Fast

Flyers are a common advertising tool for most businesses. Small businesses, in particular, can benefit from the use of a well-designed flyer, due to its relatively low cost. But not all flyers are created equal. You have to go into your flyer printing with a good idea of what makes a good flyer.

Tip Number 1: Use color

Full color flyers are much more effective than black and white ones. It’s really as simple as that. At the same time, however, don’t overdo it with the palette. You don’t want to overwhelm viewers with crazy, brilliant color all over the place (unless you are advertising a circus, perhaps). Use colors that fit with your type of business in strategic areas, and in a calculated amount, and you will have a much more powerful flyer.

Tip Number 2: Turn off the graphic design software

Okay, that’s actually not a good tip; you will need a good graphic design program to make a good flyer. What I mean is that it is often a good idea to use a photograph in your flyer, either instead of or in addition to computer generated graphics. A photograph that fits with your desired message - preferable one that depicts happy people using your product - can deliver a great message to customers.

Tip Number 3: Use a good, quality commercial printer

A common mistake among small businesses when they conduct a flyer printing is to cut back on costs by doing it themselves, or taking it to a
less than reputable printer. You will end up making a lot more money in profits if you spend the money up front to use a very good commercial printer.

If a customer comes in expecting something that was promised on a flyer, you had better be able to deliver it, or you will make yourself a lifelong enemy.

Tip Number 6: Use photographer tricks

If there is a photograph or an image that you want to be the center of attention, put it near the center of the flyer. And arrange everything else in a way that directs the viewer’s eye to that focal point.

Santas Workshop - Diary of an Elf - Day 7

Hello Everyone,

What a night we had ~ snowed until this morning. And the power went off and we all had to use candles. I didn’t like it being so dark and spooky.

Santa made all the elves get up real early and start doing some shoveling , even before we had our breakfast. It was very cold and the gusts of wind were blowing the snow in our faces. I think it was around noontime when Santa fell asleep on the couch and Mrs. Claus was in the bedroom painting some red wagons.

However, instead of working on our jobs making toys, we decided to play in the snow with our sleds and maybe make some snowmen. We made some good tracks in the snow on the hill behind our lodging. Boy, did our sleds go down the hill, even crashed into the fence several times. That was fun! Then we decided to roll big balls of snow and make some snowmen. However, the snowball got too big, got away from us, rolled down the steep hill and into the corral where the reindeer were exercising. In the meantime Santa had woke up from his nap and was standing with Rudolph in the corral. The snowball hit him directly in the tummy and knocked him over into the snow. He wasn’t too happy, but when we told him we wanted the snowman to look like him, he wasn’t quite so angry. Although he took away all our tv for a week~we were supposed to be making toys!! Not many days left before Christmas Eve according to Santa.

The baby fawn is so cute, but we are not allowed to touch him ~ only look at him. He tries to stand up but his legs are so wobbly and his “mommy” pushes him back into the hay.

Well kids I’ll have to leave you now as Mrs. Claus is ringing the bell for supper. And then it’s off to bed ~ no tv for 7 days

What if PR Was Illegal?

What if public relations were illegal? Well it kind of is if you think about it; for instance if you embellish a story which is construed as advertising then it could be considered false and misleading? If you were to make a statement and someone complained to a Federal Agency or States Attorneys General Office they might come to investigate you? If you had a customer or shareholder which said they used that information to make a decision to buy your product or stock well you could be sued by an attorney in a private right of action; lawsuit? If enough people got together you could be looking at a class action lawsuit as well.

Now public relations is legal if you are a government agency, as long as you bullshit and lie to the American People. If you tell them they are safe from criminals, fraud or International Terrorism when you know damn good and well they are in immediate danger? Or if you are government agency you can tell the consumers, citizens and investors that they are safe from SPAM or Identity Theft because your forceful agency has now made a rule or law and brought 60 cases to court which will take a year to bring to trial, meanwhile there are 60,000 scoundrels out there SPAMMING and countless criminals stealing your personal information. As well as many government agencies, which make the information available to all. In fact Public Relations is fine if you are the government. And defrauding the American Taxpayers, consumers and the American People using tactics of misrepresentation and misleading information is fine as long as you are a government agency and no one can sue you either. Think on this, as we have scoundrels afoot using PR tactics to cheat us and it is not the business community doing it.
